As a lifelong Beatles fan, I had to see this movie
Story
On Thursday 9th November 1961, a man called Brian descended the stairs in a basement in Liverpool and changed the world forever. Like 2023’s Priscilla, The Midas Man uses no Beatles music because they couldn’t get the rights, but other songs were used that they were able to get the rights to or that were already in the public domain. However, the upcoming Beatles biopic from Sam Mendes is likely to include Beatles songs.
And it started well
To be honest, I already knew most of the narrative, but I couldn’t resist the deep insight into the passion and pain behind the driving force! The relationship between Epstein and his “sons”. was well acted and drew me in.
This was largely due to Jacob Fortune-Lloyd’s outstanding performance
He manages to combine passion, eccentricity and brilliance – especially in the first half hour. But for me it then got out of hand and got a bit busy. There really isn’t enough space to explore the contradictions that led to Brian’s tragic death.
Everything kept its promise to open
The lack of Beatles compositions was a huge problem. The memorable Twist and Shout intro at the Royal Variety Show needs erm Twist and Shout. The same goes for the final scenes of All You Need is Love, which did not include the song itself.
Her touching moment with Brian is a standout moment
I have to mention Darci Shaw’s special performance as Cilla Black.
