FIVE-DAY PHONETIC WORKSHOP AT IDHAYA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN
A five-day phonetic workshop “Sound Sleuth: Unlocking The Mysteries of English Pronunciation organized by Lunar Lingua for the students of all year in B.A and M.A from Idhaya College For Women, Kumbakonam. The event happened from 04 March 2024 to 08 March 2024.
This workshop was lectured by Mrs K. Sunanda and Ms. Hariya Rose connecting the students to an excellent adventure of learning. It focused on equipping students with basic phonetic knowledge, pronunciation skills, and transcription. This focus assists them in empowering themselves with precise speaking capabilities and pronunciation techniques.
Day 1: Introduction to Basic Phonetic Sounds and Rules!
The workshop commenced with an engaging introduction to the basic phonetic sounds and rules. Mrs. Sunanda and Ms. Rose explained the fundamental concepts of phonetics, including the articulation of consonants and vowels, the significance of stress and intonation, and the phonetic alphabet. Students were introduced to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and learned how to apply it in identifying and producing different sounds accurately.
Day 2: Practicing Pronunciation and Commonly Misspelled Words
On the second day, the focus shifted to practical application. Students engaged in various exercises designed to improve their pronunciation of challenging words and commonly misspelled terms. Interactive activities and group practices helped them internalize correct pronunciation patterns. The instructors provided individualized feedback, enabling students to recognize and correct their errors.
Day 3: Review of Phonetic Essence and Transcription Studies
The third day was dedicated to reviewing the essence of phonetics and delving deeper into transcription studies. Students revisited the concepts learned on the first day, reinforcing their understanding of phonetic sounds. They also practiced transcribing words and sentences using the IPA, a skill crucial for linguists and language learners. This session solidified their ability to decode and reproduce accurate pronunciations.
Day 4: Collaborative Discussion
Collaboration was the theme of the fourth day. Students participated in group discussions, sharing their experiences and insights gained from the workshop. These discussions allowed them to articulate their understanding of phonetics and pronunciation, fostering a supportive learning environment. The collaborative nature of this session encouraged peer learning and reinforced the concepts taught by the instructors.
Day 5: Revision and Evaluation Test
The final day of the workshop was dedicated to revision and evaluation. Students reviewed all the topics covered throughout the week, followed by an evaluation test to assess their progress. This test provided valuable feedback on their proficiency in phonetics and pronunciation. Mrs. Sunanda and Ms. Rose offered constructive criticism and tips for further improvement, ensuring that the students left the workshop with a clear path for continued learning.
